Trout, stripers on S.C. coast
As spring approaches, angling action along the upper stretch of South Carolina's coast appears to be improving rapidly.Reports indicated this week that trout to 5 pounds are being caught in the Intracoastal Waterwater near Little River, along with striped bass.

The Report
1. LAKE NORMAN: Stripers, large white perch just after sunrise on live baits worked in creek channels. The lower portion of the reservoir is producing best. Improving for crappie around brush, mainly on minnows. Some catfish being boated incidental to striper fishing.
2. LAKE WYLIE: Largemouth on dark-colored artificial worms, pig-and-jig combinations cast to docks and near the mouths of creeks. Limits of crappie 4-6 feet deep on bright jigs, minnows. Plenty of white perch around creek mouths and underwater humps.
3. LAKES BADIN, TILLERY, BLEWETT FALLS: Improving daily for crappie, with some limits boated.
4. HIGH ROCK LAKE: Limits of crappie around cover 5-10 feet down, mainly on minnows.
5. LAKES HICKORY, RHODHISS: Crappie at both reservoirs, mainly on minnows.
6. LAKE JAMES: Smallmouth bass around points on shiners. Crappie in brush 12-20 feet deep on jigs, minnows.
7. FONTANA LAKE: Spawning walleye at the mouth of the Little Tennessee River near Almond on crawlers, dollflies, spoons. Little activity among smallmouth bass anglers.
8. LAKE WATEREE: Exceptional for crappie on minnows, with the Beaver Creek and Fishing Creek arms producing best. Catfish to 40 pounds on cut baits, other traditional baits worked in deep holes. Largemouth at the lower end on goldfish, shiners. Largemouth on artificial worms around main channel docks and those in Colonel Creek, June Creek.
9. LAKE HARTWELL: Stripers, hybrids on gizzard shad, herring around the mouths of creeks and in the river arms. Martin's Creek and the Seneca River are producing especially well. Largemouth on jigging spoons around structure 45-50 feet deep. Crappie in brush 8-20 feet down on jigs, minnows.
10. LAKE JOCASSEE: Trout 40 feet deep on Bad Creek spoons, drift-fished herring and shiners. Largemouth, redeye on jigs, artificial worms.
11. LAKE KEOWEE: Largemouth and spotted bass in the backs of creeks on crankbaits, jerkbaits, jig heads with watermelon-colored artificial worms. The S.C. Department of Natural Resources reports lots of lunkers being boated.
12. LAKE MURRAY: Smallish stripers on drift-fished herring, shiners, with the Black's Bridge area yielding especially good catches. Largemouth in shoreline pockets on and around points on brown dollflies, soft plastic lures. Improving for crappie on jigs, minnows around brush 8-15 feet deep.
13. LAKE THURMOND: Stripers, hybrids in the Baker Creek, Buffalo Creek, Little River and Soap Creek areas on live baits. Largemouth moving shallower and hitting crankbaits, skirted spinnerbaits. Large crappie uplake on minnows, slider lures. A stretch from Snap Creek and Pistol Creek to Landrum is producing best.
14. SANTEE-COOPER RESERVOIR: Lake Marion: Plentiful catfish on cut shad in the Dead Forest area, with the fish expected to start moving into shallower water soon. Crappie, some of them very large, on jigs, minnows around brush 8-20 feet deep. Lake Moultrie: Largemouth, moving to the shoreline, on artificial worms, crankbaits. Catfish on cut herring, mainly around stumpfields 8-10 feet deep. Crappie on minnows around brush, man-made fish attractors.
15. OUTER BANKS: Improving for puppy drum in the surf just north of Cape Point on Hatteras Island at Buxton. Scattered stripers for anglers fishing from the catwalk on the Bonner Bridge at Oregon Inlet. Reds, trout in the backwaters near Morehead City. Improved catches of wahoo, yellowfin tuna off Morehead City when sea conditions are favorable for trolling.
16. SOUTHEASTERN N.C. COAST: Stripers, trout in the Intracoastal Waterway and nearby backwaters on artificial grubs, shrimp, mud minnows. Black seabass, other bottom species offshore when sea conditions are favorable.
17. S.C. COAST: Grand Strand area: Flounder in the deep holes of the bays and inlets on mud minnows. Scattered reds, trout on Mirrolures. Bottom fish 25 miles offshore; Charleston area: Reds, or spottails, from the marshes out to near-shore artificial reefs. Trout in the creeks at Bull, Capers and Dewees Islands on artificial shrimp. Sheepshead around the artificial reefs. Cobia, little tunny offshore; Hilton Head area: Spottails, concentrated on the flats in schools of up to 500 fish, on artificial grubs, shrimp and live mud minnows. The same baits are producing trout in the backwaters. Sheepshead around near-shore wrecks. Flounder to 8 pounds at the Betsy Ross wreck. Snapper on bottom 40 miles offshore.
