Duck harvest up in S.C.
The harvest of ducks improved slightly during the recent season for hunters on S.C. Wildlife Management areas.
The state's Department of Natural Resources reported this week that 3,257 of the waterfowl were taken. That's an average of 2.22 ducks for each of the 1,467 hunters who visited the 15 areas.
The average for the 2006-07 season was 1.99.
American green-winged teal accounted for 17 percent of the harvest, followed by wood ducks, Northern shovelers, American wigeon, ring-necked ducks, gadwall and blue-winged teal.
"Overall, the season was pretty good, considering the wild weather we experienced," said DNR biologist Dean Harrigal.
"We started off dry in many areas, followed by an unseasonable warm spell in December, then a really cold spell in January. Fortunately, the colder weather improved hunting conditions, especially along the coast."
Santee Coastal Reserve in Charleston and Georgetown counties led in total harvest for the management areas with 1,070 ducks bagged by 294 hunters, an average of 3.64 per hunter. -- ONS
Flounder size limit will grow to 15.5 inches
The minimum size limit for recreationally caught flounder will increase an inch to 15.5 inches in many N.C. coastal waters on Saturday. The limit applies to flounder caught in the ocean and eastern sounds, from the Virginia state line to Browns Inlet near Jacksonville, N.C.
The new limit is necessary to account for overages in the 2007 recreational harvest of summer flounder, so that the state may remain in compliance with an Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission coast-wide quota. North Carolina had been allocated 137,000 fish for 2007. Fishermen caught 174,000 fish. -- ONS
