The fishing has been fair at best in the Tacoma area in the past few days, although there are better reports elsewhere.
Blackmouth fishing has been fair to good in the North Sound out to Sekiu. Trout anglers might want to consider heading over the mountains because a number of lakes will open Saturday.
Saltwater
Hood Canal: The action has been on the quiet side in the past week. A state creel check Saturday showed 26 anglers brought in five blackmouth at the Misery Point boat ramp.
North Sound: The fishing has been fair, but a few fish are topping 15 pounds. The farther west you go, the better the fishing, said Mike Chamberlain at Ted's Sports Center. Try such places as Lip Lip Point, Pilot Point and off Port Angeles.
Sekiu: The fishing has been pretty good in the past few days, thanks to good water conditions, said Donnalynn Olson at Olson's Resort. Most anglers are trolling west of Sekiu in water 120 to 140 feet deep. The fish have been averaging 7 to 11 pounds.
Tacoma: The action has been poor to fair. Most fish are being caught mooching a cut-plug herring at Point Dalco on the incoming tide or trolling with herring or hoochies along the mouth of Quartermaster Harbor, said a staffer at Point Defiance Boathouse Marina. Just six blackmouth were checked in by 107 anglers, according to a weekend creel check.
Rivers
Columbia: Sturgeon anglers have been having some luck in the Bonneville Pool, but the action was poor last week in the lower river.
Cowlitz: Anglers are doing better at the barrier dam, while fishing on the lower river has been slow. Last week, Tacoma Power recovered 42 coho salmon adults, 12 winter-run steelhead and one cutthroat trout at the Cowlitz Salmon Hatchery separator during four days of operations. Few smelt were caught Saturday on the Cowlitz. There were some birds and seals working the river earlier this week. Commercial catches in the mainstem of the Columbia also have tapered off.
Green: The season is winding down to the closure later this week, but some steelhead are being caught near the Auburn Golf Course and upriver near Kanasket-Palmer State Park. Jigs in pinks or white under a bobber are working best, said Tom Pollock at Auburn Sports and Marine.
Lewis: The fishing has been poor on the north fork, and the pressure has been light.
North Sound: The steelhead runs are dwindling, just before the closure for many fisheries. There will be a few areas open for catch-and-release fishing into March.
Puyallup: The action has been slow, and few people are giving it a try.
Yakima: Stonefly patterns fished in combination with small nymphs are producing rainbow trout in the upper canyon stretch. The key is keeping your flies right on the bottom, said a report from Red's Fly Shop.
Lakes
Eastside: A number of lakes will open Saturday. Trout anglers might want to try lakes such as Lenice or Nunally and the seep lakes beneath Potholes Reservoir.
Lone: The trout are measuring 12 to 18 inches. Leech, chironomids and bloodworm patterns have been the most successful. The water has cleared up but is still a bit cold.
Spanaway: The lake was to be planted Tuesday with 5,000 rainbow trout 8 to 12 inches long, said Bud Herlitzka at the Spanaway Lake Boathouse. Silver-bladed spinners cast from shore should be effective. Stillfishing the south end with green Power Bait is producing trout up to 3 pounds.
Washington: Cutthroat fishing has been good off the mouth of the Cedar River on the Rainier Avenue side. The fish have been 18 to 20 inches. Try trolling 10 to 30 feet deep, with a small herring or worm harness 100 feet behind the boat, Pollock said.
