Dangerous lionfish spotted in N.C. waters

The S.C. Department of Natural Resources has issued a bulletin warning saltwater anglers to be on the lookout for venomous lionfish. The fish have been spotted at artificial reefs from Florida to North Carolina.

Native to the tropical Indo-Pacific region, these lionfish are thought to have been released or else escaped from aquariums.

According to the S.C. agency, "lionfish, having no natural enemies, may adversely impact natural fish populations. ... This fish has venomous spines and may pose a danger to divers and anglers alike.

"If an angler does get stung by a spine, the fisherman is advised to immerse the wound in hot water for 30 to 90 minutes and seek medical attention as soon as possible."
