A dreary week for fishing
 
Chilly, drizzly weather has discouraged anglers across the Carolinas the past few days.However, those who've persisted have caught fish.
 
Crappie continue to hit well on all the large Piedmont reservoirs and smaller city/county lakes. Stripers and catfish are striking at Lake Norman. And limits of smallmouth bass are being boated at Fontana Lake. Fishing Forecast | Tom Higgins
 
The Report
 
1. LAKE NORMAN: Striped bass in the backs of creeks in very shallow water on live shad. Crappie around docks and shoreline brush on minnows. Catfish on cut baits.
 
2. LAKE WYLIE: Largemouth out from the shoreline in 10 feet of water on crankbaits, soft plastic lures in reddish color patterns. Crappie on jigs tipped with minnows. White perch along the river channel 20-25 feet down on jigs, minnows.
 
3. LAKES BADIN, TILLERY, BLEWETT FALLS: Crappie, moving into shallower cover, and hitting mainly minnows. Largemouth on crankbaits, skirted spinnerbaits, pig-and-jig combinations.
 
4. HIGH ROCK LAKE: Crappie around docks and shallow brush. Largemouth starting to strike spinnerbaits especially well. Scattered stripers on live baits.
 
5. LAKES HICKORY, RHODHISS: Little fishing activity reported, but those anglers who are going are boating good catches, with crappie action especially strong.
 
6. LAKE JAMES: Smallmouth on shiners around the points and rocky bluffs. Crappie on minnows worked around cover 10-15 feet deep. Scattered walleye on crawlers.
 
7. FONTANA LAKE: Plenty of smallmouth off the shoreline 8-12 feet down on live shiners, artificial Andrew Minnow lures, crankbaits. Walleye, returning downlake from the spawning run up the Little Tennessee River, on crawlers, minnows.
 
8. LAKE WATEREE: Largemouth along the banks on crankbaits, spinnerbaits. Stripers downlake near the dam on live herring, shiners and, when feeding in surface schools, on topwater lures. Crappie in the Beaver Creek and Fishing Creek arms on minnows. Catfish on cut baits.
 
9. LAKE HARTWELL: Stripers, hybrids up the river and creek arms on large gizzard shad. Largemouth just off the shoreline on artificial worms, crankbaits. Much improved for crappie around brush 10-15 feet deep.
 
10. LAKE JOCASSEE: Trout, including some fish in the 8-pound range, on Bad Creek spoons trolled from the surface down to 40 feet. Drift-fishing live baits at night also is productive.
 
11. LAKE KEOWEE: Spotted bass at Mile Creek and near Gap Hill Landing on crankbaits, jerkbaits. Largemouth are starting to hit topwater lures along the shoreline.
 
12. LAKE MURRAY: Stripers on live baits either free-lined or used under planer boards. Stripers also are taking cut baits. Largemouth around shallow cover on crankbaits, soft plastic lures. Shellcrackers along the banks on crickets, earthworms.
 
13. LAKE THURMOND: Largemouth in the Dorden area on crankbaits, spinnerbaits worked in the backs of creeks. Stripers, hybrids near the dam on free-lined live herring. Plentiful crappie on jigs, minnows.
 
14. SANTEE-COOPER RESERVOIR: Lake Marion: Good to excellent on the upper end for largemouth on artificial worms, crankbaits, spinnerbaits. Blue catfish in the shallows on cut herring. Crappie at Poplar Creek, Jack's Creek and Stump Hole Landing. Shellcrackers at Santee State Park. Lake Moultrie: Largemouth in the backs of coves on artificial worms, crankbaits. Catfish on cut herring, other oily cut baits fished shallow around ditches and stumps. Good-sized crappie around shallow brush on minnows. Scattered stripers in the Bonneau area and at the mouth of the Diversion Canal on bucktails.
 
15. OUTER BANKS: Strong winds and rough sea conditions generally have disrupted offshore fishing the past few days. However, a couple fine catches of dolphin and yellowfin tuna have been boated off Oregon Inlet. Surfcasters are taking numerous bluefish in the 3-pound range at Cape Point near Buxton. Some large red drum have been caught by surfcasters at Ocracoke Island. Whiting to almost 2 pounds are hitting in the surf at Morehead City and at Bogue Inlet Pier. Reds continue to be caught in the marshes near Atlantic Beach/Morehead City.
 
16. SOUTHEASTERN N.C. COAST: Reds in the Ocean Isle area on mud minnows worked very shallow under floats. Wahoo, bottom species offshore when sea conditions are favorable.
 
17. S.C. COAST: Little River area: Stripers, trout in the Intracoastal Waterway on grubs, artificial shrimp. Grand Strand: Black drum, spottails in the creeks on live mullet and mud minnows. Reds at Springmaid Pier. Bottom species offshore when sea conditions are favorable. Charleston area: Spottails, trout in the backwaters on live baits, artificial shrimp. Sheepshead around the near-shore artificial reefs. Bottom species, blackfin tuna, dolphin and wahoo offshore. Hilton Head/Beaufort area: Spottails, trout in the creeks on mud minnows, artificials such as the Gulp Swimming Minnow and DOA Shrimp.
