The main issue is what's known as ciguatera poisoning.  It's caused by dinoflagellates and the toxin builds up as you go higher up the food chain.  Barracudas are most often considered but other fish including grouper, sea bass, and snappers have been known to cause problems.  It not normally fatal but can be nasty.  Someone once told me that as a general rule of thumb, if it was 36 inches or less, no problems, up to 40 you're taking chances and over 40, make a wall hanging....!  LOL

i caugth a barracuda once (50 miles from cuba) and i was told never to eat them they are posion to humans

One thing that has to be considered is the size when deciding when to eat them.  Since they are the apex predator any toxins get concentrated in them.  Same thing with barracuda.  Only eat the small ones.

Aloha Les and the rest of the group,
Just wondering, have you eaten shark and what are your thoughts. Also is their a diffrence in taste from one to another (Hammerhead to blue to lemon) Never have eaten any, that I know of (heard McDonalds fish was shark but that is untrue).
