[fishingtheusaandcanada] Fussy about floats Try Drennan models Freep.com Detroit Free Press

Lately I've been learning more about float fishing with a centerpin reel, and now I understand why European anglers are so fussy about their floats and often carry several dozen.

Some of the best I've found for American angling come from a company called Drennan, and the Crystal series has been excellent for steelhead fishing. The clear plastic bodies are invisible in the water, which can't hurt. They come in a variety of shapes and sizes that make them effective in all kinds of water.

Each float is also marked with the amount of weight (in split shots) required to make it ride at the proper level. This is crucial, because a properly weighted float will duck under at the slightest touch and without the fish feeling resistance.

I've been using the Drennan loafer float for several years as my all-around model for panfish in lakes. For trout in moderate streams, I like a Drennan bobber model.

For steelhead and other fish in fast water, it's tough to beat the Drennan piker, which works with weighted jigs and spinners.

The drawback to Drennans is the cost -- $2.25 to $5 each -- but they are very tough.
