Writer to hold dolphin clinic at Concord mall
Angler and fishing writer/editor George Poveromo will conduct a special clinic Tuesday at Bass Pro Shops/Outdoor World at Concord Mills.Poveromo, the host of "World of Fishing" on ESPN2, will offer instruction on how to catch more and larger dolphin.
His appearance will benefit the N.C. Waterman Saltwater Fishing Club in its drive to buy fishing licenses and rod-reel combos for disabled children.
Tickets are $5 for the seminar, which is set to begin at 7 p.m. Tickets give attendees a chance at door prizes and admission to a hamburger/hot dog cookout.
Although Poveromo will concentrate on dolphin, he could be coaxed into talking about a 113-pound wahoo he caught recently.

Yancey County angler killed on fishing trip
A freak accident has taken the life of an ardent Yancey County angler while he was driving with his young daughter on a fishing trip.
Wayne Joseph Carroll, 34, of Burnsville was killed May 3 when a large tree fell from an embankment on Bald Creek Mountain Road and struck the roof of his SUV on the driver's side as the Isuzu passed by.
Carroll's vehicle continued for several feet before hitting a guard rail and going into a ditch. His daughter, Caitlin, was unhurt.
Carroll was a corrections officer at the Mountain View Facility. The Yancey Times Journal reported that he delighted in taking Caitlin and her brother, Dylan, on trout fishing trips to area streams. -- T.H.
Carolina Clash event begins today in S.C.
The Carolina Clash, the first bass tournament in South Carolina sponsored by the BASS fishing organization since the Bassmaster Classic in February, begins today on Lake Murray near Columbia with a first-place prize of $100,000.The four-day tournament will draw more than 100 pro anglers, including five from the area. They are Todd Auten of Lake Wylie, Guy Eaker of Cherryville, Kevin Langill of Terrell, Britt Myers of Mount Holly and Jason Quinn of Lake Wylie.
Daily launches and weigh-ins will take place at the Lake Murray Marina & Yacht Club, 1600 Marina Road, Irmo. Launches will begin at 6:30 a.m.; weigh-ins, 3 p.m. For more information, see www.bassmaster.com. -- Observer News Services
Clinton man appointed to wildlife group job
A Clinton businessman, John Litton Clark, has been appointed to the 19-member N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission by Speaker of the House Joe Hackney.
Clark has served with Ducks Unlimited and the National Wild Turkey Federation and is a member of the Quality Deer Management Association. -- ONS

A haul of 40 large bluefish and a puppy drum in the Ocracoke Island surf by the party of Ed Mendosa and Craig Chalmer of Charlotte, Stan Evans and John Caldwell of Hickory and Dan Jarwosky of Newton.
A 35-pound catfish by Jason Sherrill and a 15-pounder by Jeffrey McCarter, 12, while fishing together at Lake Norman.
An 18-pound Lake Norman blue catfish by West Rick of Toledo, Ohio, a U.S. Navy serviceman visiting relatives before deploying to Afghanistan. He caught 10 other catfish while fishing with guide Mac Byrum.
Limits of walleye three straight nights at Fontana Lake by Brian Milsap of Robbinsville.
A 29-pound king mackerel at Bogue Inlet Pier by Mark Deans of Raleigh.
