JEFFREY P. MAYOR; jeff.mayor@thenewstribune.com Published: May 14th, 2008 01:00 AMLocal lakes seem to be the best option for consistent action. And if it warms up as much as expected this weekend, then the fishing should be good.
Rivers
Rivers
Columbia: The steelhead and hatchery jack chinook season will not open as scheduled Friday and has been delayed until further notice. It could be closed until the summer-chinook season scheduled to start June 16. Some sturgeon are being caught throughout the lower river. Boat anglers in The Dalles Pool are catching walleye, and are being taken in the Bonneville Pool. Shad fishing below Bonneville Dam opens Friday, but only 49 shad had been counted at Bonneville Dam through Sunday.
Cowlitz: Spring chinook and steelhead catches remain scattered, according to state reports. Through May 7, only 64 hatchery adult spring chinook had returned to the salmon hatchery. However, 30 hatchery summer run steelhead had returned.
Icicle: Salmon fishing opens in this Chelan County stream with a daily limit of two chinook, minimum size 12 inches. The river is open from the closure signs 800 feet upstream of the mouth to 500 feet downstream of the Leavenworth National Fish Hatchery rack.
Kalama: A mix of spring chinook and steelhead are being caught. No spring chinook and only one hatchery summer-run steelhead had returned to Kalama Falls Hatchery through May 7.
Lewis: Anglers from the mouth to the salmon hatchery are catching a mix of spring chinook and steelhead. Fishing improved late last week when flows dropped.
Wind: In high winds and rough water, boat anglers averaged an adult chinook for every 11.5 rods. Action was slow for bank anglers at the mouth.
Yakima: River conditions have improved since last week, but the upper river remains the best option for trout anglers. At this point, nymphs are best.
Lakes
American: Still producing kokanee in fair numbers. Trolling Wedding Rings behind a dodger has been the most effective.
Chelan: The lake is producing a good number of kokanee, improving numbers of lake trout and some landlocked chinook salmon. Try fishing near Lakeside and Minneapolis Beach.
Drano: Boat anglers averaged an adult chinook for every 4.7 rods, but it was slow going from the bank. The opener a week ago was the best day with a fish for every three rods.
Mineral: Fishing continues to be good. Anglers have been catching rainbow trout using light-colored Power Bait with an egg sinker behind a swivel, and a 4- or 5-foot leader. A size 8 or 10 egg hook works best, said Bill Evans of Mineral Lake Resort.
Moses Lake: Troll worm harnesses along the ledges in the middle of Lind Coulee for walleye. The smallmouth and largemouth bass have been hitting crankbaits, plastic baits and leeches.
Offut: The Offut Lake Resort is holding a derby Friday through Sunday for children 15 years old and younger. The fee is the usual resort admission, plus $1.
Rattlesnake: Woolly buggers in olive and orange have been producing trout.
Rufus Woods: Triploid rainbow trout continue to be produced in good numbers. Try pulling black woolly bugger flies behind an action disk by Wiggle Fin.
Spanaway: Trout fishing has been good early this week. Anglers are having luck with Power Bait as well as Wedding Rings.
Salt water
Fly-fishing: Beach fishing has shown some improvement. The incoming evening tide has been producing some silver salmon in the Tacoma Narrows.
Port Angeles: Seems to have the best halibut fishing, with many weighing close to 50 pounds.
Tacoma: The lingcod action has been inconsistent. Many anglers are using blue label herring for the cod. Blackmouth action has been slow. The most positive reports have come in from Fox Island.
