Congratulations to your grandson. Was it a white
ulua? Ulua are so hard to catch and fight as good as
any big game fish. How lucky for you guys.
Marty, Ulua is kind of a generic name for Trevally.
They are actually of the Jack family of fishes. The
juvenile stage is called Papio. In this case, it
probably is a Giant Trevally, and this magnificient
fish grows to well over 100 lbs. They are mostly
caught from the shore with heavy conventional casting
reels and very long rods. The Big Island where Rocky
lives is home to most of the really big ulua. The
ulua is one of the hardest fighting fish in Hawaii's
waters today. It is a true accomplishment for one so
young to land an ulua.
