[fishingtheusaandcanada] Snow hurt fishing around the state, but a few good spots remain TheNewsTribune

CRAIG HILL; craig.hill@thenewstribune.com Published: April 2nd, 2008 01:00 AMSpring snow has made the season less than ideal for fishing, but anglers are not without hope.
The Puget Sound Fly Company released a list of five places where the water is still clean and clear and the fishing should be pretty good.

The company recommends the Yakima and Sol Duc rivers, Lenice and Cady lakes and South Puget Sound for fly fishing.

The fishing might be hot, but the weather certainly won't be, so bundle up.

Rivers

Cowlitz: Tacoma Power recovered 46 winter-run steelhead adults at the Cowlitz Salmon Hatchery separator and released five radio-tagged steelhead in the upper river. Water visibility is 11 feet.

Kalama: Visibility is about 3 feet, but pressure has been light of late, according to Wayne Orzel of Pritchard's Western Angler. Orzel recommends fishing the pools with eggs.

Olympic coast: Today is the last day to fish the Hoh River and the South Fork Hoh River. They close to sport fishing at 12:01 a.m. Thursday to protect wild steelhead, the state announced. Olympic National Park also will close portions of the two rivers that are within the park's boundary. The closure is needed to meet the wild steelhead spawning escapement goal of 2,400 fish.

Yakima: The Puget Sound Fly Company reports the Yakima has been low and clear thanks to the cold weather. Nymphing has been effective with Pat's, Jelly Bean baetis and bullet head skwala.

Saltwater

Tacoma: Pressure has been light because of the nasty weather, but anglers are having occasional luck, according to staff at Point Defiance Boathouse Marina.

Hood Canal: Gary Florek of Hoodsport G&M Hardware said fishing has been slow. "Cripes, the weather has been bad," Florek said. "It's not worth it."

South Sound: Zittle's Marina at Johnson Point reports that cutthroat sport fishing has been going well. Cutthroat fishing currently is only catch and release. Otherwise, fishing has been good near Devils Head and Fox Island for trollers using bait or artificial squid, and with flashers.

North Sound: Fishing has been mediocre, but fair in places such as Hat Island and Point No Point. Last weekend, more than 800 participants in the Anacortes Salmon Derby landed 224 fish. Nancy Cabe of Mount Vernon caught the largest fish – a 24.22-pound chinook. The catch won her $10,000.

Lakes

American: The lake was stocked with foot-long trout March 23, and anglers still are doing well. Over the weekend, a fisherman caught his limit off the dock using PowerBait, worm and a bobber, said David Anderson of Bill's Boathouse.

Cady: The Puget Sound Fly Company staff said this lake near Belfair is its favorite in Western Washington. Streamers such as flesh flies and beldars are effective on full sinking lines.

Spanaway: Trout fishing has been best at the south end of the lake. The boat ramp is open.

Washington: Results have been mixed for cutthroat fishing here, but smallmouth bass fishing is starting to pick up.

Eastern Washington: Trolling for triploids on Rufus Woods Lake has been good. Roses Lake is a good place to score rainbows. The action also has been good in lower Lake Chelan.
