Fishing picks up on coast
With persistent winds abating somewhat, offshore angling action is picking up, particularly at Oregon Inlet and Morehead City.When sea conditions have been favorable this week, blackfin tuna, wahoo and yellowfin tuna have been boated off Oregon Inlet. Additionally, the spring's first blue marlin was caught and released.
The catch off Morehead City has included white marlin, bonito, blackfin and yellowfin tuna. King mackerel have been caught at the 240 Rock and West Rock. Blues have been taken around the artificial reefs and near-shore wrecks. Fishing Forecast | Tom Higgins
The Report
1. LAKE NORMAN: Striped bass in the very backs of creeks on live baits. Largemouth bass along the shoreline on a variety of lures, with artificial worms and crankbaits producing best. Crappie suspended 12 feet down in water 20-22 feet deep.
2. LAKE WYLIE: Bedding largemouth along the shoreline on artificial lizards, crankbaits. Crappie around shoreline brush and boat docks on jigs, minnows. White perch on sandy bottom 15 feet deep on minnows, small spoons. Catfish on traditional baits.
3. LAKES BADIN, TILLERY, BLEWETT FALLS: Plentiful crappie around brush, piers, mostly on minnows. White perch at Tillery on minnows fished a foot off bottom in 22 feet of water.
4. HIGH ROCK LAKE: Crappie on minnows around shallow brush, docks. Increasing numbers of crappie on trolled jigs, grubs, sliders. Scattered largemouth on skirted spinnerbaits.
5. LAKES HICKORY, RHODHISS: Much improved for crappie at Hickory. Continued fine crappie catches at Rhodhiss, where the fish are concentrated around brush. A few stripers uplake on Hickory near Rhodhiss Dam.
6. LAKE JAMES: Increasing numbers of walleye on crawlers. Best action is along clay banks and points, and around sunken trees. Smallmouth bass on shiners worked around points. Crappie in brushy cover on minnows.
7. FONTANA LAKE: Limits of smallmouth on shiners, small crankbaits, twister-tail grubs cast to rocky banks. Walleye in shoreline pockets under floating branches and pollen on crawlers, dollflies.
8. LAKE WATEREE: Bedding llargemouth on crankbaits, spinnerbaits. Slightly stained water in the mid-lake area is producing best. Stripers downlake on live herring, shad and, when feeding in surface schools, on topwater lures. Large catfish on cut bait in shallow water. Crappie in shoreline cover.
9. LAKE HARTWELL: Stripers, hybrids 8-15 feet deep off points uplake on gizzard shad. Largemouth along the shoreline on a variety of lures. Plentiful crappie on jigs, grubs and minnows worked around brush.
10. LAKE JOCASSEE: Trout, including several large fish, on plugs and spoons trolled from the surface down to 55 feet. Largemouth and redeyes along the banks on green artificial grubs and worms.
11. LAKE KEOWEE: Largemouth and spotted bass on artificial crawdads, jerkbaits along the shoreline and around docks.
12. LAKE MURRAY: Stripers, mainly on live herring and gizzard shad, from Dreher Island downlake. Largemouth, staging to spawn, in the backs of coves around shallow structure on artificial lizards and worms, crankbaits. Crappie around brush and creek mouths. Lots of shellcrackers on crickets, earthworms along the shoreline.
13. LAKE THURMOND: Stripers, hybrids in the creek arms and Little River on live herring. Largemouth in pockets on artificial lizards in pumpkin seed and watermelon colors. Plentiful crappie in the shallows on jigs, minnows.
14. SANTEE-COOPER RESERVOIR: Lake Marion: Largemouth at the upper end of the reservoir on artificial lizards and worms. Catfish to 50 pounds on cut bait in water as shallow as 2 feet. Crappie around shallow cover, mostly on minnows. Lake Moultrie: Largemouth, including quite a few lunkers, on artificial worms and crankbaits. Big catfish on cut herring and other oily baits fished shallow. Crappie around shoreline brush in the Bonneau and Russellville areas. Scattered schooling stripers at the mouth of the Diversion Canal.
15. OUTER BANKS: Flounder, trout at the "Little Bridge" on the Nags Head/Manteo Causeway. Blues, trout at Nags Head area piers. Blues, whiting in the surf from Avon to Hatteras Inlet. Black drum, croaker in the Frisco surf. Black drum, blues, puppy drum and whiting in the Ocracoke Island surf. Lots of whiting in Beaufort Inlet and the Turning Basin at Morehead City. Blues, whiting, scattered spots at piers and in the surf from Atlantic Beach to Emerald Isle.
16. SOUTHEASTERN N.C. COAST: Blackfin tuna, cobia, king mackerel offshore near an area known as The Horseshoe. Bonito around the Gen. Sherman wreck a mile off the Shallotte sea buoy. Blues, whiting, scattered flounder at piers and in the surf. Puppy drum in the Intracoastal Waterway.
17. S.C. COAST: Improving for flounder, trout in the backwaters from Little River to Beaufort. Increasing numbers of black drum, blues, croaker and whiting at piers in the Grand Strand area. Bottom species such as black seabass, grouper and snapper offshore when sea conditions are favorable. A few dolphin, sailfish and wahoo off Charleston.
