Re: [fishingtheusaandcanada] Mahi Mahi

It depends...

Where are you going to fish for them?

If you are going to be in bluewater (200 ft+)and are
going to troll, use chromehead lures with double
octopus skirts in the 7 1/2" or 9 1/2" lengths. You
can also use resin lures with octopus skirts. Mahi do
like a lot of flash so pick skirts accordingly. I
favor blue/silver skirts with pink on the inside, or
green/gold and pink/orange on the inside. Troll at 9
to 12 knots. Look for a whole lot of fishing birds
(we call them bird piles) and troll around the school,
not through it. when the Mahi see the lures, they'll
come a-hopping!! That's how we do it in the Pacific.
You can find resin lures on ebay. That's where I buy
some of mine. Search for Big Game Lures/All
categories, and look for sellers from Hawaii. I
really like lures from Gary Yamamoto, the work very
well for me. But lures made in hawaii are
individually hand poured resin and final shaped on a
lathe. They are very expensive, $15 - $50. But they
are well worth the price. Most of those lures will
not come rigged. You will have to do that yourself or
take it to a fishing store to get it done. I usually
use 12 feet of 400 lb test leader with at least a
single 10/0 to 12/0 stainless steel mustad trolling
hook. Why so heavy? Because I have run into too may
marlins and using wimpy lines (200 lb test and
smaller) will not do.

I don't know where you plan to fish at, or what kind
of equipment you have. If you are going after big
ones (50 lbs +), you'll need at the minimum something
the equivalent of a Penn Senator 9/0, loaded with 80
lb test line, and a rod rated at 50 to 80 lb test.

Here's a safety tip: Do not drop a landed Mahi on the
deck with the hook still in its mouth, without
pacifying him with a fish bat between his eyes. You
are in for a very nasty surprise if the fish gets
loose on the deck. I consider the mahi as one of the
most dangerous fish you can have loose on the deck.
