Aloha Gang,

Went fishing Sunday afternoon with 3 other guys:
Scott Phillips (EOD), Jerrod English and Preston Page
(Radars), and a teenager by the name of Blake
Sudderth. I do like to take kids fishing. Blake kept
up a running commentary on everything and anything the
whole five hour trip. But it was fun having him along
and he's good luck to have on the boat. We rented a
21 foot Mako with twin Yamaha 115 four strokes and
rigged up with 3 rods and reels ( Scott's 80 TW Penn
International on a custom made shorty fast taper pole
loaded with 700 yds 130 lb test line, my Shimano 50 TW
on a custom short pole loaded with 800 yds 200 lb test
Power Pro Super Braided line, and Jerrod's Penn
International 70 on a Tuna Stick), and two 125 ft
handlines. All the reels are two speeds. We didn't
take the outriggers, just didn't think about it.
Anyway, we headed out the small boat marina in the
after noon and through SAR Pass ten minutes later and
put out all five lines. First thing we ran into was
hundreds of Spinner Dolphins, racing with the boat and
jumping out of the water. Bet they scared every fish
away! So, we got no bites until we left the huge pod
of hundreds of seagoing mammals. An hour into
fishing, we got our first hit, off my rod that we had
put in the rod holder behind the console. Being right
behind my back, the screaming reel scared the holy
bejesus outa me! anyway, blake cranked the guy in.
It took him a while because he had put that one 300
yards back and set the drag lightly. He had to crank
in over 400 yds of line. The Wahoo weighed 34 lbs. A
half out later, we had a tripple strike, two reels and
a handline. Two fish came off, and we boated a 20 +
Wahoo. One of the fish that came off was a Wahoo that
was bigger that the first one. We continued up the
reef and had a marlin strike the handlined lure. sure
glad we avoided that one! Didn't want to hassle with
a Marlin that day. An hour later we had a double and
boated 2 more Wahoo. We also hit several bird piles
feeding on something, but there were no bites. We got
to the northern most limit area, Taruj island and turn
out to head back to SAR Pass. On the way back down
the reef, we three more Wahoo of around 20 lbs each,
and a rainbow runner, 10 lbs. By the time we went
back to the small boat marina, we had 7 fish (140+
lbs) iced down and ready for a cold one. We met
Walter Erb there also, and he had 150 qt cooler ful
also, with mahi, Wahoo, Yellowfin Tuna (20 lb'ers) and
a Yellowfin Tuna head that weighed in at 36 lbs. He
said a huge Oceanic White Tip Shark ate him. The tuna
would have weight over 100lbs intact. I don't have
any photos but if I get them from the other guys, I
will pass it along to you guys.

Aloha,

Les
