THE NEWS TRIBUNE Published: March 13th, 2008 01:00 AMWashington led the nation in tiger muskies caught and released in 2007, according to Muskies Inc. The group is a nonprofit organization whose mission is to improve the environment and habitat, and expand and enhance the musky fishery.
Because part of its mission includes encouraging anglers to catch and release fish, Muskies Inc. tracks several categories for muskies caught and released, including the hybrid tiger muskie.

 

Several Washington residents dominated the hybrid-tiger musky category for 2007. According to the year-end tally, 11 of the top 25 largest fish were caught in Washington. Among the Washington residents listed were Michael Floyd of Auburn (fifth, 10th, 14th and 15th ), Jill Blakeway of Duvall (sixth), Mark L. Wells of Puyallup (ninth and 20th), Todd A. Reis of Tacoma (13th), Josh Brannon of Puyallup (16th and 17th) and Lori Wells of Puyallup (21st).

 

Tiger muskies are a sterile, hybrid cross between muskellunge and northern pike. Since 1998, tiger muskies have been stocked in seven lakes in Washington, including Lake Tapps.
