The best saltwater fishing this week looks to be between Port Townsend and Port Angeles, said Mike Chamberlain of Ted's Sports Center in Lynnwood.
"That's where I'd be (going) if I wanted to do some serious fishing," Chamberlain said.
Anglers in this area have had good luck landing blackmouth.
"Folks are catching blackmouth in the middle teens," Chamberlain said. "It's not been too bad."
But depending on the report, fishing appears to be tapering off around the rest of the Sound.
Salt water
Tacoma: Fishing has picked up in recent days with an average of one fish for every two anglers, according to the Point Defiance Boathouse staff. Trolling with flashers and herring is working best. The hot spots are the clay banks and the Gig Harbor shoreline.
South Sound: Area 13 opened Saturday, giving anglers a chance to fish for blackmouth.
Seattle: Fishing has been very slow, and most anglers are heading to Area 11 North Vashon Island to the Narrows Bridge.
Rivers
Columbia: Sturgeon fishing yielded no catches on the lower river from Feb. 25-March 2, according to the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife. However, walleye anglers are having some luck in the Bonneville pool. The WDFW also predicts March to be a poor month for smelt fishing. It is currently illegal to harvest smelt from tributaries other than the Cowlitz.
Cowlitz: The WDFW test dipped for smelt near Gearhart Park and Lexington without a catch. Last week, Tacoma Power recovered 13 coho and 12 winter-run steelhead at the Cowlitz Salmon Hatchery separator.
Kalama: The WDFW reported last week that 10 bank anglers kept one hatchery steelhead, and boat anglers had no catches.
Lewis: Five bank anglers released one steelhead, and five boat anglers had no catches at the mouth of the river, according to the WDFW.
Humptulips: River fishing has been best of late on the Olympic Peninsula. While the rivers have either been in need of rain or had too much rain, the times in between have yielded good fishing.
Puyallup and Green: The local rivers closed last week.
Lakes
American: The action remains slow. Few anglers have been trying this lake, and those that are aren't getting many bites. Fishing should improve as temperatures rise.
Spanaway: Fishing has been pretty good after the lake was stocked with 5,000 rainbow trout last week. The south end of the lake has been the place to go, but dock fishing has been slow.
Sacajawea: This Longview lake was planted with 1,500 catchable- size rainbows Feb. 25.
Lone: This Whidbey Island lake has rewarded those who troll slow and deep.
Washington: Auburn Sports and Marine reports that cutthroat fishing has been OK, and that smallmouth fishing should start picking up at a depth between 35-45 feet over the next few weeks.
Eastern Washington: While many lakes opened Saturday many reports say that water temperature needs to climb a few degrees before fishing is ideal.
