Steelhead have been slow returning to the Kalama Falls hatcheries the past two weeks, said Chris Wagemann of the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife.
"A handful of wild and hatchery steelhead were sorted last week and none this week," Wagemann said via e-mail. "The river conditions are excellent. Some fresh fish moved in two weeks ago with the full moon high tides."
Anglers on the Kalama River are averaging one fish per boat, but bank anglers are doing a little better. Most of the catches are wild winter steelhead.
No salmon have returned to the hatchery yet and they aren't expected until April, Wagemann said.
Saltwater
Tacoma: Fishing has been good this week near the clay banks and Dalco Passage.
Sekiu: Good water conditions have resulted in decent fishing. Blackmouth have been biting.
Seattle: Seacrest Boathouse reports that fishing and squiding have been slow. Most anglers are trying Area 11 North Vashon Island to the Narrows Bridge.
South Sound: Area 13 the South Puget Sound opens today and anglers may have luck going for blackmouth.
Rivers
Puyallup: The Puyallup closed Friday.
Columbia: The fishing has been slow here, too, but earlier this week sturgeon anglers were having some luck in the Bonneville Pool.
Green: The Green River closed Friday.
Satsop: "If I was heading out this weekend," said Tom Pollack of Auburn Sports and Marine, "I'd be heading out that way."
Humptulips: This is another river Pollack recommends, although like the Satsop it is a bit in need of rain right now.
Cowlitz: With the closest rivers closing, local anglers are likely to start heading this way. During a four-day stretch last week, Tacoma Power recovered 42 coho, 12 winter-run steelhead and one cutthroat at the Cowlitz Salmon Hatchery separator.
Lakes
American: David Anderson of Bill's Boathouse said there haven't been many anglers on the lake, and the few who've tried aren't getting bites. "It's going to get better as it warms up," Anderson said.
Spanaway: Bud Herlitzka of the Spanaway Park Boat House said the lake was stocked with 5,000 rainbows Tuesday, but they've been picky biters. Fishing has been spotty on the docks, but those trying the south end of the lake are doing well.
Eastern Washington: Some lakes open today. If you are looking for trout, Lenice and Nunally lakes and the lakes beneath Potholes Reservoir could be good places to drop your line.
Lone: Leech, chironomids and bloodworm patters are working well for those trying to land trout in the clear waters of this lake.
Washington: Cutthroat fishing has been good for trollers at the mouth of the Cedar River.
