Murrells Inlet angler has sheepshead record
There's a new listing for sheepshead among South Carolina's state-record catches. Jimmy Widener of Murrells Inlet now holds the S.C. mark for sheepshead with a 16-pound, 6-ounce fish he caught March 1 in the Wando River.
Widener, 38, was fishing in Bedford's Creek arm when he enticed the fish to take a blue crab bait.
His catch beat the former record by 10 ounces. That listing was held by Douglas Hover of James Island, who made his catch in 2001.
Meanwhile, the S.C. Department of Natural Resources has added the white grunt to its list of saltwater fish for record listing.
First to hold the record is Sean Murphy of Myrtle Beach, who boated a white grunt weighing 3 pounds on Feb. 2 off Murrells Inlet while fishing at the Bill Perry Artificial Reef.
