A 73-pound Atlantic Striped Bass caught last month off Cape Henry was certified today as a state record catch, according to a news release from the Virginia Marine Resources Commission.

Fred Barnes, of Chesapeake, shattered the previous record when he caught the fish near the 4A Buoy on Jan. 23.

The previous record was a 68-pound, 1-ounce fish caught by Clay Armstrong in 2006.

Barnes' fish, a 22-year-old female, is being hailed as an example of the success of catch and size limits, the release says.
